The Quest to Find Authentic Hawaiian Cuisine
By
I spent 6 months living on Kauai, which is the northernmost island in the Hawaiian islands chain. In that short period of time, I fell in love with the people and the slow-paced lifestyle. But more importantly, I fell in love with the food. After I moved back to Georgia, I wondered if I would find the Hawaiian dishes that I had grown to love.
My two go-to dishes while living in Hawaii were the Poke Bowls featuring diced raw fish and Spam Musubi (a hearty helping of grilled Spam on top of rice wrapped in dried seaweed paper aka nori). It’s surprisingly very filling and easy to take with you for a quick breakfast on-the-go.
Imagine my delight when I saw a Poke Bowl on the menu at a Hawaiian Style BBQ. I got the Spicy Shoyu (Japanese-style soy sauce) Poke Bowl which is a combination of diced tuna, green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, and limu seaweed served over a bed of rice. Hawaiian Style BBQ also offers a wide variety of Aloha juices, a favorite canned drink in Hawaii. My personal favorite is the Strawberry Guava juice. You definitely get the “Ohana” vibe from the staff – they are so friendly and always greet you with a smile. I often think about the great times I had in the beautiful “Aloha State” and getting a Poke Bowl from Hawaiian Style BBQ definitely takes me back, even if only for a moment.
