Downtown Augusta Gets More Delicious
By
The term “Mediterranean” can be used to refer to the cuisine of many different countries, including Italy and Greece. In Laziza’s case, it refers to Lebanese food, and specifically the food prepared by the owner’s mother when he was growing up.
From their flavorful lentil soup to the divine lamb and beef gyro, Nader Khatib’s adaptation of his family’s recipes has proven to be a massive hit with the local community. So massive, in fact, Nader and his wife, Lisa, added a second location in downtown Augusta on the corner of 9th and Broad Street. Proudly located on the corner opposite the brand new James Brown mural, the new restaurant is the epitome of hot Mediterranean style, with a chill downtown vibe.
Their first location in Evans is now home to Namaste Indian Street Food – Laziza outgrew it, and in early 2019 moved a few doors down to a corner unit. Customers can dine in, or enjoy outdoor seating on the new patio, replete with covered tables. A similar arrangement is available at the new downtown Augusta location, but with more emphasis on the café and bar than on family-style dining.
It’s a move that’s been highly-anticipated by the downtown crowd since it was first announced, and for good reason. The Laziza menu is full of conventional Mediterranean favorites, including kebabs, gyros, hummus, and baklava. For first-time diners, I would definitely recommend leaping into the unknown and trying almost anything, but that’s because I know it’s all delicious (and coincidentally, or not, the word “laziza” is Arabic for “delicious.”)
However, it’s natural to feel intimidated by the unknown, and Laziza’s menu is full of Lebanese, Turkish, and Greek food. So, if you’re a Laziza virgin, just order the chicken shawarma wrap, a side of falafel or feta fries, Greek salad, and an affogato for dessert. If you don’t like coffee, sub baklava for that affogato.
Everything is fresh, and the flavors are authentic. And, many of the items are made in-house, including the salad dressings and four different types of hummus.
Nader and Lisa also throw their support behind other local businesses – their coffee comes from the local Buona Caffe coffee roasters, and the local breweries supply their beer.
So if you’re looking for your new favorite spot, check out Laziza at their Evans or new Augusta location!
